Seed Share SA is a growing movement of people across South Africa who believe that food security begins at home. With just a pack of seeds, every person can take part in building stronger, more resilient local food systems—and we invite you to join us.
What started as a small circle of backyard gardeners in Swellendam has grown into a nationwide network. Over the past two years we’ve shared thousands of seed packs, sparking gardens and conversations in communities across the country.
As part of Seed Share Summer Edition for 2025 we are supporting communities to own and operate their local food systems. We do this by encouraging and supporting the communities we serve to host seasonal food markets coordinated by the gardeners themselves. These markets facilitate community building conversations, community driven action towards food security as well as gardener-to-household vegetable sales.
At its core, Seed Share SA is about collaboration.
“Our success has been thanks to many hands—donors, seed distributors, and gardeners themselves,” says Steph. “This is a collective movement, and together we can ensure food security grows from the ground up.”
Our vision for Seed Share SA is to see communities across SA growing, eating, sharing and selling the produce from their backyards locally. This vision can only be made possible through collective efforts. Every donation, no matter the size, helps us place seeds in the hands of gardeners who are ready to grow.
How to be part of it:
- Donate to the campaign: Every contribution directly funds seeds, packaging, and distribution.
- Grow with us: Start a garden and share in the network of food producers.
- Offer skills and resources: From digital support to bulk seeds and packaging, ESC welcomes all who want to contribute.
