Press release
Advanced polymer manufacturer igus continues to innovate in its ongoing quest to replace traditional lubricated linear guides with its drylin polymer technology which vastly improves machine reliability and no lubrication means it contributes to safer cleaner usage with no risk of contamination.
Linear guides are essential in machines that move along fixed axes where traditional systems rely on grease and oil. Friction at the bearing-guide interface of these systems is the leading cause of premature failure, while lubricants themselves often introduce contamination risks in sensitive sectors such as food processing and pharmaceuticals.

According to igus South Africa’s Juan-Eric Davidtz the drylin linear guides address these issues by employing tribo-optimised iglidur polymers that glide smoothly across corrosion-free surfaces without lubrication. The principle of “gliding instead of rolling” in these circumstances eliminates friction-related wear and ensures maintenance-free operation even under extreme conditions including dirty environments, submersion, chemical and temperature extremes.
“We also recently introduced PFAS-free and hygienic-certified linear guides including the world’s first EHEDG-compliant system designed for food safety applications. Our hybrid roller carriages and compact locking carriages are also expanding the portfolio into precision positioning for consumer appliances and automotive interiors and some such as our SLX range can even handle loads up to 600 kilograms.
“Locally we have many customers in the packing, mining and heavy industries that require good mechanical and corrosion-resistance while steel, manufacturing and other industries require high hear resistance, dust and hygienic equipment. Industries like medical laboratories, as well as food and beverage users can adopt hygienic-certified systems aligned with international standards. We also assemble locally which means that lead times and delivery are shortened and technical assistance is available where necessary,” says Juan-Eric.

He sums up that igus the combination of corrosion-free materials and tribo-optimised polymers dramatically improve durability and contribute to lower noise performance in environments where quiet operation is essential. The modular design of the systems also allow for flexible installation across different rail profiles and pillow blocks which ensures that it can be used in diverse applications.
